Bio:
As a Clinician Scientist, and Registered Dietitian (RD), my focus is the use of clinical trials to assess community-based questions. I am interested in assessment of nutrition education from both the perspective of the patient/client and the health care professional. Using knowledge translation (KT) strategies, classical behaviour change theories and core education principals, my colleagues and I develop, implement and assess dietary interventions. I am particularly interested in working with health care professionals and patients to assess approaches to chronic disease prevention and treatment. In my work, training and mentorship activities, I try to highlight the capacity clinicians, specifically RDs, have to play a key role in KT. As a strong believer that education activities inform research and vice versa, I am passionate about educating my students about the research process and enjoy guiding them as they develop knowledge and skills to become engaged in the knowledge-to-action process. My doctoral thesis is focused on medical nutrition therapy/nutrition education development, implementation and evaluation. I have a deep interest in assessment of the clinical utility of glycemic index education and study under the supervision of Dr Thomas Wolever. I am particularly interested in working with people at risk for or living with type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Other research interests/experience include, but are not limited to, antioxidant/oxidation, breastmilk composition, randomized control trials and research ethics. I have experience working as a RD in various settings. I have worked and/or work in academic (basic and applied science), clinical, industrial, community and public health settings.
