Gestational Diabetes

Recommendations and Evidence

Gestational diabetes (GDM) is defined as hyperglycemia that is first recognized during pregnancy (1). Gestational diabetes is a risk factor for the future development of type 2 diabetes. Women with GDM should be evaluated and followed by a registered dietitian to ensure that nutrition therapy promotes euglycemia, appropriate weight gain and adequate nutritional intake.
