The updated Acute Inpatient Stroke Care Guidelines, published in the International Journal of Stroke, continue to emphasize the positive outcomes (increased survival, return home and gain independence) that organized stroke units with an interprofessional team, characterized by core experienced professionals including physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech language pathologists, social workers and clinical dietitians, have on patients following a stroke. One of the new updates is the inclusion of the dietitian with speech language pathologists and occupational therapists as professionals who can be referred to for detailed assessment and management of swallowing.
