Chronic Disease Prevention and Multivitamin and Mineral Supplementation: What is the Latest?
The Question
What is the safety and efficacy of multivitamin/mineral use for chronic disease prevention in healthy adults? The Recommendation
Multivitamin and mineral supplementation (including antioxidant mixtures) are generally considered safe for use among healthy adults. However, clinical trials and observational data do not support multivitamin and mineral supplementation for the prevention of chronic disease and associated outcomes in adults, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Multivitamin and mineral supplementation is therefore not recommended for chronic disease prevention in the general population.
