Gastrointestinal System - Diverticular Disease

The etiology of diverticulosis (i.e. the presence of pouch-like protrusions in the intestinal wall) is not well understood, although it seems to be correlated with genetics and age-related changes to the wall of the gastrointestinal tract (1,2). Diverticula may be caused by increased luminal pressure leading to the protrusion of the mucosal layer of the gastrointestinal tract through weak points in the muscular layer of the gastrointestinal tract. Most often
