Diverticulitis is inflammation and/or infection of a diverticulum or diverticula (1, 2). About 15-20% of individuals with diverticulosis progress to diverticulitis (2). The etiology of diverticulitis is not well understood (3). The evidence suggests the possibility of both an inflammatory and an infectious etiology, which may vary between individuals (2, 3).
