Anemia is characterized by reductions in hemoglobin and/or circulating red blood cell (RBC) mass to below cut-offs specific to age and gender (1). Anemia results from one of the following: blood loss, deficient erythropoiesis (microcytic, normochromic-normocytic or macrocytic) or excessive hemolysis due to extrinsic RBC defects (2).
