Food guidelines vary in different countries and are usually based on a country’s adopted reference intakes for healthy individuals. These reference intakes are specified on the basis of age, gender and lifecycle stage and cover energy and a varying number of nutrient substances. They are used in the planning and assessing of nutritionally adequate diets for healthy individuals.
