Nephropathy occurs when diabetes and other related co-morbid conditions damage the blood vessels of the kidney. As with other diabetes complications nephropathy occurs in several stages that eventually progress to dialysis and the requirement for transplantation. Although longitudinal data from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial suggests that intensive insulin therapy can reduce the prevalence of nephropathy in those with type 1 diabetes, chronic kidney disease
