Hereditary hemochromatosis is a genetic autosomal recessive disorder whereby intestinal iron absorption is excessive, resulting in progressive deposition of iron in various tissues and organs throughout the body such as the liver, heart, pancreas, joints and skin (1,2). Serum ferritin, transferrin saturation and serum iron will generally be elevated (1), and as the liver is damaged, elevations in liver enzymes will occur (3).
