PEN® eNews 15(7) July 2025 - All About Iodine

PEN® eNews is a monthly e-newsletter shared with the global PEN Community and created to help dietitians position themselves as leaders in evidence-based nutrition practice. In addition, users of the PEN System will find articles on the new evidence, resources and features available and how to maximize one's use of PEN.

Should Iodine Supplements Be Recommended During Lactation?

The Question

How does lactation affect an individual’s requirement for vitamin/mineral supplementation?

Recommendation

Micronutrient supplementation may be appropriate when a lactating individual is deficient, based on individual needs, or the infant has special needs.

Remarks

Regarding iodine, the National Health and Medical Research Council recommend a daily iodine supplement of 150 μg for breastfeeding women to compensate for inadequate amounts in the food supply. Women with pre-existing thyroid conditions should consult their general practitioner before taking a supplement.

Grade of Evidence: B & C

Are Iodine Supplements Necessary During Pregnancy?

The Question

For pregnant women with hypothyroidism taking thyroid medication, does iodine supplementation improve thyroid function?

Recommendation

Limited evidence suggests that iodine supplements are not needed for pregnant women with hypothyroidism who are taking thyroid medication.

Remarks

See Additional Content: International Dietary Reference Values Collection for recommendations for iodine intake during pregnancy.

Let's Learn About: Toolkits

Besides keeping you up to date on the latest evidence, the PEN System can also help you refine your clinical skills. Did you know that the PEN System can help guide your nutrition assessment for many common health conditions? Or that the PEN System can help you write PES statements?

Practice Guidance Toolkits can be a useful way to use the PEN System to apply the Nutrition Care Process. We have Practice Guidance Toolkits for clinical topics only.

To find them, you can browse our Practice Guidance Toolkits webpage. Or, if you’re already reading about a clinical topic, you’ll see a link on the right-hand side of the page that says “Practice Guidance Toolkits”.

Click there, and you’ll be directed to the Practice Guidance Toolkit for that topic. Using the right-hand menu, you can browse the following sections: Key Nutrition Issues; Nutrition Assessment, Monitoring and Evaluation; Nutrition [and Dietetic] Diagnosis; Nutrition Intervention; and Nutrition Education and Professional Materials. You can even view our references.
Practice Guidance Toolkits are meant to help bridge the gap between evidence and practice.

Happy reading from the PEN team!
