Trending Topics pieces (Article Analyses, Evidence Clips and Other Topics) are published in timely response to recent media and journal articles, position statements, clinical guidelines, etc. Since they are based on the most recent evidence/publications, they may not be consistent with PEN evidence in other PEN content areas. As soon as possible, when this occurs, the PEN content will be reviewed and updated as needed.
Newly Released Report on Genetically Engineered (GE) Crops
An expert committee was struck by the National Academy of Science to examine the benefits and risks posed by GE crops and food. They examined over 1000 research and grey literature publications, consulted with stakeholders and received comments from the public. See the report: Genetically Engineered Crops: Experiences and Prospects. In their public release slides, the committee summarized their findings relative to agronomic and environmental effects; human health effects; and social and economic impact, and then addressed prospects for novel genetically engineered crops and regulatory approaches noting that these were tied to "broader social, political, legal, and cultural differences." For more information, see: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine's interactive website, A Science-based Look at Genetically Engineered Crops, created to support dissemination of the findings of the report, along with the newly published PEN® Genetically Modified Foods Background.
